There are players who struggle to find a consistent thread between club and country, caught between two sets of ideas that never quite square up. Dylan Lawlor is not one of them. The 20-year-old Cardiff City and Wales defender reckons he is fortunate enough to be playing under two managers who might as well be reading from the same coaching manual.

Speaking on BBC Wales's Welsh-language podcast Y Coridor Ansicrwydd (Corridor of Uncertainty), Lawlor was candid about how much common ground he sees between Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy and Wales boss Craig Bellamy. "They are so similar so it's easy to switch between the two," he said. "They're so detailed and see football the same way and to be honest it's the same way I see it. It suits me and it's easy to switch between the two."

That sense of philosophical alignment is rare, and Lawlor had an interesting frame of reference to illustrate it. He pointed to former Liverpool defender Andy Robertson's remarks about the difference between Jürgen Klopp and his successor Arne Slot — the suggestion being that Klopp built everything around his own squad's strengths rather than reshaping the game plan around the opposition.

"The most eye-opening thing for me is that it's all about us," Lawlor said. "I saw what Andy Robertson said about Slot and Klopp and the difference. It's obvious to me at Cardiff and for Wales that it's all about us and not to worry about the opposition. You go into games full of confidence — it's all about us."

It is a philosophy that clearly resonates with a young defender still finding his feet at senior level. Lawlor became a key part of Barry-Murphy's Cardiff side that won promotion back to the Championship last season, though his current campaign has been disrupted by a knee injury sustained during Wales's summer fixture against Ghana. He only returned to action as a substitute in Cardiff's Championship win over Charlton Athletic shortly before the recent international break.

That comeback came too late to be considered for Wales's four Nations League games, something Lawlor was transparent about. "To be honest I wasn't in the picture to be part of the camp," he admitted, with his eye already fixed firmly on November and the prospect of facing Portugal and Norway. The thought of lining up against Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland is not lost on him either. "I was gutted," he said. "Fingers crossed I will be able to play against them in November and prove myself against them."

Lawlor's journey to this point has a pleasing circularity to it. He made his league debut in the final game of the 2024-25 season, coming on as a second-half substitute against Norwich City — a chance handed to him by interim manager Aaron Ramsey, who attended the same school, Ysgol Cwm Rhymni in Caerphilly. "He was someone I could look up to," Lawlor said of Ramsey. "He was an inspiration to me when I was growing up and then I had the chance to work with him and then under him when he was starting his coaching career. He would pass on things to me, tips and things I could add to my game and when it comes from someone like that you have to take it."

Barry-Murphy was appointed Cardiff head coach in June 2025 following the club's relegation from the Championship at the end of the previous campaign, and the early signs are that Lawlor — when fit — is very much part of his plans. Bellamy handed the defender his first senior Wales cap in September 2025, and Lawlor has since made six international appearances.

With two managers effectively running the same system and a school hero who handed him his debut, Lawlor has had no shortage of good fortune in the people he has found around him. Now he just needs to stay fit long enough to make the most of it.
