Two matches into the new Ligue 1 season, Paris Saint-Germain already look like a side searching for answers. A stoppage-time brace prevented what would have been a genuinely alarming defeat at Lille on Friday evening, but the manner of their latest 2-2 draw will give Luis Enrique's squad little comfort as the campaign takes shape.

PSG escape — but only just

Lille opened the scoring in the 21st minute through Hákon Haraldsson, the Icelandic playmaker curling a superb finish past goalkeeper Matvei Safonov after latching on to a clever reverse pass from Olivier Giroud. For long stretches PSG, despite the considerable attacking talent at their disposal, were unable to fashion clear opportunities, with Lille defending deep and funnelling the champions onto wide positions where they offered little threat.

The home side appeared to have made their defensive work count when Dilane Bakwa scored in the 84th minute to double Lille's advantage. What followed was extraordinary. PSG midfielder Vitinha curled a stunning strike into the top-left corner in the first minute of added time to give his side a foothold, and four minutes later the Portuguese international delivered a cross that Marquinhos met with a firm header to complete one of the more unlikely comebacks of the early season.

It rescues a point, but it does not mask the underlying issues. PSG were held by Rennes on the opening weekend in identical fashion, and a team with their resources will expect considerably more control over matches of this kind. The market has already taken note of the sluggish start.

Bayern send an early message

While PSG were scrambling, Bayern Munich were providing a very different spectacle in the Bundesliga. A 5-1 demolition of Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena extended their unbeaten run to 15 matches and served as a forceful reminder that the Bavarians have every intention of defending the title they won by 16 points last season — a campaign in which they also set a record of 122 goals.

Stuttgart, who finished fourth last term, briefly threatened to spoil the party when Josha Vagnoman equalised early in the second half. Vagnoman's evening ended on a less pleasing note, however, as he also scored an own goal — making him the sole player on the scoresheet for both sides in a match that Stuttgart will want to forget quickly.

Dayot Upamecano, Michael Olise, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Luis Díaz all found the net for the hosts, and Bayern's coaches will have been equally encouraged by the volume of chances that went begging. There is clearly no shortage of firepower in Munich.

Ramos marks San Siro homecoming

Elsewhere, AC Milan made it two wins from two in Serie A with a 2-0 victory over Venezia at San Siro. Gonçalo Ramos, the Portugal forward signed from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported €74 million, marked his home debut with a driven finish from a tight angle on 69 minutes — his first Serie A goal. A late own goal from Redouane Halhal completed the scoring. The match was also Milan's first at San Siro since the passing of club legend Franco Baresi, and the supporters paid their tributes to the former captain before kick-off.

In La Liga, newly promoted Racing Santander recorded their first top-flight win since returning to the division with a 3-2 victory over Elche, while Alavés edged out Villarreal 1-0.

For PSG, the priority is finding some defensive cohesion and clinical edge before deeper into September arrives. For Bayern, the question is whether any Bundesliga rival can live with them. On this evidence, the answer is far from clear.
