Three goals. All of them quality. None of them in doubt from roughly the 45th minute onwards. Aston Villa are Europa League champions for the second time in their history, defeating Freiburg 3-0 at the Beşiktaş Stadium in Istanbul on Wednesday evening to end a 30-year wait for a major trophy — and to give Unai Emery something he has always craved: proof in silverware form.

Emery makes history

Emery has now won the Europa League five times. Five. No manager in the competition's history has done it before him, and Thomas Tuchel's old quip — that Uefa may as well rename the trophy after the Spaniard — felt less like a joke and more like a policy proposal by the time John McGinn lifted the cup into the Istanbul night sky.

McGinn, magnificent throughout the campaign, was the last Villa player to collect his medal from Uefa president Aleksander Čeferin before darting towards a sea of claret and blue fans to show off the engraving. The trophy has no handles, which did not stop every Villa player finding a way to hoist it overhead.

How the goals arrived

Villa wore white — just as they did in Rotterdam in 1982 against another German side in red — and the echoes of history will not have been lost on supporters old enough to remember that night. Those who were not around for Rotterdam will always have Istanbul.

Youri Tielemans opened the scoring with a beauty, and within seven minutes Emiliano Buendía had added a second, curling a left-footed effort into the top corner with what turned out to be the final kick of the first half. That second goal effectively ended Freiburg as a contest. Morgan Rogers completed the scoring approaching the hour mark, his smart movement at the front post rewarded with a finish that made the evening feel like a procession.

For a club that last won a major domestic honour with the League Cup in 1996, the significance of the result can barely be overstated.

What it means for next season

Beyond the celebrations, there are practical consequences. Villa's victory means up to six Premier League clubs could qualify for next season's Champions League — but only if Villa finish fifth or lower in the table on the final day. As Europa League winners, Villa would claim an automatic Champions League berth separate from the league's top-four allocation, potentially opening an additional qualification spot for whichever side finishes sixth (currently Bournemouth).

Villa face Manchester City on the final day, with Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and City already assured of top-four finishes. The permutations are complex, but the headline is simple: Villa are in the Champions League next season, one way or another.

The image of the night

Statistics and qualification scenarios can wait. The image that will travel furthest from Wednesday is Emiliano Martínez giving Emery a piggyback across the pitch after the final whistle, the keeper's enormous grin saying everything that needed to be said. Villa's co-owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens were also pictured lifting the trophy. Up in the VIP area, the Prince of Wales — an avid Villa supporter who has previously admitted to browsing fan forums under a pseudonym — reportedly filmed the trophy lift on his iPhone and offered his congratulations on social media shortly afterwards.

Where would you like your statue, Mr Emery? Villa fans already know the answer.
