There is something reassuring about the way Scottish football refuses to wait around. While the World Cup is barely drawing to a close, the Premier Sports Cup is already rattling into life, with four top-flight sides kicking off their group-stage campaigns on Saturday afternoon — and there are a few genuinely compelling storylines to get your teeth into.
Holders St Mirren head to Dumbarton
Start with the champions. St Mirren arrive at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium in Dumbarton (15:00 BST) as holders after a remarkable December victory over Celtic at Hampden, where they ran out 3-1 winners. The months that followed were considerably bumpier. Manager Stephen Robinson departed for Aberdeen in March, leaving Craig McLeish to steer the Buddies through a chaotic final stretch that included a 6-2 Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Celtic — a game they were, to put it mildly, in at 2-2 going into extra-time — and a tense relegation play-off against Partick Thistle, which St Mirren edged 2-1 on aggregate. McLeish's reward was the job on a permanent basis. Now comes the small matter of defending silverware. Elsewhere in Group C, East Kilbride welcome Scottish Cup finalists Dunfermline Athletic.
Airdrie return to Dens Park for another bite
Dundee supporters will remember last July rather too clearly. Airdrieonians arrived at Dens Park and left with a 1-0 win that contributed significantly to the Dark Blues failing to progress from their group. A year on, almost to the day, Airdrie are back (15:00 BST) under Steven Pressley, having enjoyed a fairly settled Premiership campaign last term. Championship sides upsetting top-flight opposition in early League Cup rounds is one of Scottish football's most reliable traditions, and Dundee will be keen to ensure history does not repeat itself.
Also in Group D, Annan Athletic host Ross County — a journey that will test the visitors' pre-season fitness as much as anything else.
Dundee United away at Stirling in the evening
Jim Goodwin's side get their campaign under way with an evening trip to Stirling Albion (17:30 BST). United were exempt from the first round last season as a Scottish club in European competition, only to be knocked out in round two by Kilmarnock. This time they enter from the very beginning. Goodwin's men finished seventh in the Premiership last term and will be looking to build some early momentum. Group B's Saturday card is completed by Arbroath visiting Spartans earlier in the day.
Falkirk looking to go one better than last term
Few sides generated as much goodwill across Scottish football last season as Falkirk. John McGlynn's Bairns, arriving in the Premiership off the back of successive promotions, finished sixth — a remarkable achievement by any measure. In the League Cup they came through their group unbeaten before drawing Celtic in round two and losing 4-1 in Glasgow. Saturday sees them travel to the capital, adding an edge to what might otherwise feel like a routine fixture. In the same Group G, Stranraer host Ayr United.
Who has to wait until Tuesday?
Not every top-flight side is involved this weekend. Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and newly promoted St Johnstone all begin their Group campaigns on Tuesday, 14 July. Livingston, who were relegated from the Premiership, also open on that date. For those clubs, a few days more of waiting while others set the early tone.
It is early doors, of course — group-stage results have a way of feeling decisive before anyone has found their legs — but Scottish football is back, and given the quality of the narratives already lining up on Saturday, that feels like nothing but good news.
