Atlético Madrid have drawn a firm line under Barcelona's pursuit of Julián Álvarez, with chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín telling Spanish broadcaster Movistar Plus on Thursday that the Argentina forward will "never, ever" be allowed to join their La Liga rivals — under any circumstances.

The statement amounts to one of the most unambiguous transfer refusals of the summer window. Gil Marín did not mince his words, accusing Barcelona of dishonesty, a lack of ethics and unprofessional conduct after the Catalan club's president Joan Laporta publicly declared on Wednesday that Barça remained "very interested" in signing the 26-year-old.

"The truth is that it outrages us even more; we are repulsed by the dishonesty, the lack of ethics, transparency and professionalism," Gil Marín said. "We can only insist that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances. You have my word — the player will most certainly not be transferred to Barcelona."

The remarks drew an immediate response from Barcelona vice-president Rafa Yuste, who told Movistar that Gil Marín had "crossed a red line" with what he called a show of disrespect. The noises out of both clubs suggest this has long since ceased to be a straightforward transfer negotiation and become something considerably more personal.

Board united behind the stance

Atlético's board of directors unanimously backed the position earlier on Thursday, with the club stating there was "zero consideration" of a deal before Tuesday's deadline. Gil Marín stressed that the support stretched from shareholders to directors, presenting a united front at a moment when the pressure from Barcelona has been relentless.

The club's public stance has not been without turbulence, however. Álvarez was booed by sections of the Atlético support during their 2-2 home draw with Villarreal on Sunday, following comments the forward made while on World Cup duty with Argentina this summer, in which he expressed a desire to leave and spoke of fulfilling a dream elsewhere.

Gil Marín acknowledged that the situation has taken a toll on the player. "Júlian is really struggling; there have been people who have set out to deceive and confuse him, and I'm very sorry about that," he said. "He's a great professional and footballer, but he's very confused and going through a very difficult time, both personally and professionally."

Atlético's emphatic veto of a Barcelona deal does not necessarily mean Álvarez stays put. Arsenal have also been linked with a move for the former Manchester City man, and the market will be watching closely to see whether the Gunners test Atlético's resolve before Tuesday's window closes.

Gil Marín's preference, though, was clear. "Our intention and my personal dream is for him to stay with us, to remain at Atlético," he said. "To compete amongst the greats, you need great players, and Júlian is one. If he believes that staying at Atlético is no longer feasible, we will look for an alternative — but it will never, ever be Barcelona."

With the window entering its final days, it remains to be seen whether Álvarez sees out the deadline at the Metropolitano or whether a third club enters the fray with enough urgency to force Atlético's hand. One thing appears settled: the road to Barcelona is firmly closed.
