Rangers have completed the signing of midfielder Cammy Devlin on a free transfer following his departure from Heart of Midlothian, with the Australian international describing his move to Ibrox as "an absolute honour and privilege".

Devlin, 28, spent five years at Tynecastle, making 171 appearances and scoring eight goals. He has signed a two-year deal with the option of a further 12 months, and joins a Rangers side that is clearly intent on reshaping itself following a turbulent period at the club.

Third arrival from Tynecastle this summer

The signing marks a remarkable summer pipeline between the two Edinburgh and Glasgow clubs. Striker Lawrence Shankland had already moved to Ibrox prior to Scotland's involvement at the World Cup, while Derek McInnes was appointed Rangers manager after Danny Rohl departed for RB Salzburg. McInnes, of course, had been managing Hearts, and now he has followed both Shankland and Devlin along the same path.

Rangers have acquired all three without paying a single transfer fee — a significant piece of business by any measure.

"With the gaffer coming here and a lot of change happening at the club, it feels like a great time to be coming here," said Devlin. "I am so aware, having been in Scotland for a while now, of the size of the club and everything that comes with playing for such a massive football club."

What does Devlin actually offer?

Some sections of the Rangers support have questioned whether Devlin's game is suited to a side that typically dominates possession in Scottish Premiership fixtures. It is a fair question, but the numbers tell a more nuanced story.

Last season, Devlin led the entire Premiership in tackles per 90 minutes. Among midfielders, he ranked second for interceptions, second for defensive contributions, and third for recoveries. That kind of defensive industriousness gives McInnes a reliable midfield anchor — someone who wins the ball back quickly and allows more creative players to operate ahead of him.

The passing concerns, meanwhile, may be somewhat overstated. Only four Premiership midfielders completed more accurate passes per 90 minutes than Devlin last season, and one of those was Rangers' own Nicolas Raskin. The idea that he struggles to use the ball is harder to sustain when you look at the actual data.

  • Most tackles per 90 minutes in the Scottish Premiership last season
  • Second among midfielders for interceptions per 90
  • Second among midfielders for defensive contributions per 90
  • Third among midfielders for recoveries per 90

McInnes was unequivocal in his praise. "His levels of consistency for me were superb, and he is the type of player that every manager wants in his team," the Rangers boss said. "He is someone who knows the Scottish league, and nothing will surprise him with what lies ahead."

International pedigree adds another dimension

Devlin has been capped five times by Australia and was part of their 2026 World Cup squad, though he did not feature during the tournament itself. That international experience, even in a peripheral role, speaks to the regard in which he is held at national level.

At 28, he arrives at the peak of his powers and with a clear understanding of what Scottish football demands. For McInnes, who knows him inside out from their time together at Hearts, that familiarity could prove invaluable as Rangers attempt to mount a genuine title challenge in the season ahead. The market appears to view the Ibrox club's summer activity positively, with their prospects of closing the gap on recent years' dominance attracting considerable attention.

Devlin himself is clearly relishing the challenge: "To call myself a Rangers player now feels pretty special and I just cannot wait to get started."
