Manchester United have moved quickly to bolster their goalkeeping ranks, confirming the signing of Karl Darlow on a free transfer following his departure from Leeds United. The 35-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year contract at Old Trafford, with the club holding an option to extend by a further season.
Crossing the Pennines
The move is one that will raise eyebrows in West Yorkshire. Darlow's contract at Elland Road expired this summer and, although Leeds tabled a fresh offer, the Wales international has chosen to head in the opposite direction across the Pennines. Leeds confirmed his exit in a statement that, pointedly, stopped well short of naming his new employers — a sign of just how delicate the rivalry remains between the two clubs.
"Leeds United can confirm Karl Darlow has left the club upon the expiration of his contract to pursue an opportunity elsewhere," the club said. "Despite the offer of a new deal to remain in West Yorkshire, the goalkeeper wished to explore a different challenge and leaves the Whites with the best wishes of everyone at Elland Road."
Darlow made 38 appearances across three seasons in a Leeds shirt and finished last season as Daniel Farke's first-choice keeper. Over the course of a career that now spans 279 club appearances, he has established himself as a reliable and experienced presence between the sticks. He has also earned 15 caps for Wales.
What His Arrival Means at Old Trafford
Darlow is not walking into the number-one shirt. First-choice duties at United are expected to fall to Senne Lammens, the Belgian goalkeeper currently on a three-week break following his country's World Cup campaign. In Lammens's absence, Darlow is set to feature prominently during pre-season, with United's opening fixture — against Wrexham in Helsinki — scheduled for 18 July.
His arrival does, however, appear to signal the end of Altay Bayindir's time at the club. The Turkey international came close to joining Besiktas in the January window and, with Darlow now on board as the established deputy, the noises out of Old Trafford suggest Bayindir's exit is a matter of when rather than if.
Darlow Delighted With the Move
The man himself made no attempt to hide his enthusiasm. "I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United," Darlow said in his first comments as a Red Devil. "I'm joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I'm really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands."
At 35, Darlow is clearly not being recruited as a long-term solution — but for a club in the middle of a significant rebuild, signing a composed, experienced backup on a free makes sound business sense. United also confirmed the £48m signing of Santos earlier this week and are understood to be closing in on Youri Tielemans, suggesting the summer overhaul is well underway ahead of pre-season.
