Manchester United have moved to bolster their goalkeeping ranks by signing Karl Darlow on a free transfer, with the veteran stopper putting pen to paper on a two-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further season.
Darlow arrives after his deal at Leeds United expired this summer. Despite being offered fresh terms to stay in West Yorkshire, the 35-year-old has opted for a move across the Pennines — a transfer Leeds notably chose not to reference directly in their own statement.
"Leeds United can confirm Karl Darlow has left the club upon the expiration of his contract to pursue an opportunity elsewhere," the Championship club said. "Despite the offer of a new deal to remain in West Yorkshire, the goalkeeper wished to explore a different challenge and leaves the Whites with the best wishes of everyone at Elland Road."
Darlow made 38 appearances across three seasons for Daniel Farke's side, finishing last term as the first-choice keeper. His overall club record stands at 279 appearances, and he carries 15 international caps for Wales to his name.
The goalkeeper made no secret of his excitement at the switch. "I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United," Darlow said. "I'm joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I'm really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands."
Darlow set to deputise behind Lammens
The noises out of Old Trafford suggest Darlow is expected to slot in as understudy to first-choice stopper Senne Lammens. With the Belgian currently on a three-week break following his country's World Cup campaign, Darlow is likely to get significant minutes during United's pre-season schedule, which gets under way against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July.
His arrival has wider implications for the squad. Turkey international Altay Bayindir, who came close to joining Besiktas in January, now looks likely to depart Old Trafford following this addition to the goalkeeping department.
A free-transfer piece of business
For United, the deal is a cost-effective piece of recruitment. Darlow costs nothing in transfer fees, and at his age he brings Championship-tested experience as cover without demanding a prominent role in first-team planning. The market would likely regard this as a sensible piece of housekeeping rather than a headline statement — but with Lammens only recently established as the senior option, having reliable depth between the sticks is a practical necessity.
United's summer business continues to gather pace. The club have already moved to secure other targets, and Darlow's signing rounds out a goalkeeping group that the club clearly feel is built for the demands of what lies ahead.
