Arsenal have moved quickly to reshape their attacking options this summer, confirming the free-transfer signing of Germany international Selina Cerci from Frauen-Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.
The 26-year-old arrives in north London having spent her entire career in Germany, and the deal — understood to be a two-year contract with an option for a further 12 months — represents her first venture outside of her home country. She will also be stepping into the UEFA Women's Champions League for the first time.
"It is a big honour for me," Cerci said upon completing the move. "It didn't matter which other clubs were interested in me — I wanted to play for Arsenal."
Filling the Mead-shaped void
The signing comes in direct response to the departure of club stalwart Beth Mead, 31, who left Arsenal for WSL champions Manchester City earlier this summer after nine seasons at the club. Mead had been hampered by injury throughout last season, contributing just two league goals before her release.
Cerci arrives with considerably more recent form to her name. In 47 appearances for Hoffenheim, she scored 34 goals and twice finished as joint-second in the Frauen-Bundesliga's top scorers' chart with 16 goals in a season. Last term she also contributed nine assists in league football — joint-second in the division — including matching the tally of incoming team-mate Georgia Stanway, who has herself just joined Arsenal from Bayern Munich.
Arsenal director of women's football Clare Wheatley was direct in her assessment. "She's an instinctive goalscorer with a proven record in the Bundesliga," Wheatley said. "We believe she's in a strong position to transition to English football."
Head coach Renée Slegers echoed that confidence. "[Selina] has impressive goalscoring numbers and brings good presence, physicality and forward intent. Combined with her strong work ethic, we feel these qualities make her a great addition to our squad."
A career built on resilience
Cerci's path to Arsenal has not been straightforward. After prolific spells at Werder Bremen and Turbine Potsdam earlier in her career, she suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury in March 2022 that cost her a place at the Women's Euros that year and the Women's World Cup the following summer. A move to Hoffenheim via FC Köln followed, and it was there that she rediscovered her best form.
She holds 20 caps for Germany, scoring five international goals, and makes clear she is ready for the next challenge. "I'm excited about stepping out of my comfort zone," she has said.
Arsenal's title ambitions rest on a fast start
The Gunners were the WSL's second-highest scorers last season but saw their title challenge falter under fixture congestion late in the campaign. City, powered in part by Mead, currently sit at the top of the division's pecking order.
The market will note that the integration of foreign forwards is never guaranteed. Compatriot Lea Schüller managed only one goal in 11 appearances for Manchester United last season despite arriving with strong Bundesliga credentials — a cautionary tale Arsenal's backroom staff will be well aware of.
At 26 and entering what many regard as a striker's prime years, however, Cerci carries real promise. Arsenal will be hoping she settles quickly — they cannot afford another slow start if they are to challenge City and end a title drought that stretches back to 2019.
