There are occasions when the World Cup conspires to give us exactly the spectacle it promises. Friday evening at Boston Stadium — where France face Norway in what amounts to a Group I playoff for top spot — is shaping up to be one of them. Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, two of the most devastating forwards of their generation, will share a pitch with genuine stakes attached. Both nations have already qualified for the knockout rounds, but the winner here earns, in theory, the more favourable route through the bracket.
Each man arrives carrying four goals in two appearances. Lionel Messi, still doing the extraordinary at the age of 39, leads the Golden Boot race on five, but the chasing pack is increasingly made up of just these two. The numbers, though, tell a story that goes considerably deeper than a goal tally.
France with and without Mbappe
Since August 2022, France have won 69.8 per cent of their matches when Mbappe has featured, against a considerably less impressive 50 per cent when he has been absent. His presence also shifts the team's attacking tempo: Les Bleus average 2.3 goals per game with him in the side, compared with 1.9 without him. For a side of France's squad depth — one packed with Champions League regulars and domestic title winners — those are stark differentials. Mbappe is also France's all-time leading goalscorer, and at 26 he trails Messi's World Cup record by just two goals despite having played 16 fewer years of international football at this level.
The Frenchman's game offers something beyond the penalty box, too. At this tournament he has attempted 14 dribbles across the opening two matches, a figure that illustrates how much France use him as a carry-and-create player rather than a static finisher. Where the statistics are less flattering, his defensive contribution is minimal — data from Real Madrid's 2025-26 season placed him near the very foot of the rankings for combined defensive work among regular starters in the top five leagues.
Haaland's indispensability is even more pronounced
If anything, the weight Haaland carries for Norway makes Mbappe's centrality to France look modest by comparison. Since August 2022, Norway have won 64.5 per cent of their games with Haaland involved. Without him, that figure drops to 33.3 per cent — a collapse that reflects, with some honesty, the comparative limitations of the squad around him. Norway's depth simply cannot be measured against France's in the same breath.
The goalscoring numbers are remarkable in spades. Haaland has scored in 12 consecutive competitive internationals, finding the net 16 times in his last six matches for his country. He sits on 59 international goals in just 52 appearances — one fewer than Mbappe's 60, but achieved in 48 fewer games. He is also only the second player in 50 years to score multiple goals in each of his first two World Cup matches, after Harry Kane for England in 2018. For a man experiencing his first World Cup, there is no hint of the occasion overwhelming him.
In terms of finishing efficiency, Haaland edges his rival across the past four club seasons. He has converted 23.43 per cent of his shots in league football, against 18.24 per cent for Mbappe, who narrowed the gap this season without quite closing it. His heat map from this tournament hugs the penalty area with purpose; Mbappe, by contrast, roams far wider, creating as much as he converts.
A question of ambition as much as ability
Both players have been directly involved in roughly 44 per cent of their country's goals since August 2022 — Mbappe through 33 goals and 17 assists for France, Haaland through 39 goals and four assists for Norway. In that sense, they are almost mirror images of each other's importance, albeit in very different national contexts.
France enter Friday's match as genuine tournament contenders. Norway, brilliant and organised as they are, are unlikely to be troubling the final weekend without something close to the miraculous. Haaland himself has reportedly acknowledged that he expects France to win. Whether or not he believes that privately, the footballer in him will be doing everything possible to prove the prediction wrong when the whistle goes.
These two have shared pitches in club football and traded statistics at the highest level for years. On Friday, in front of a Boston crowd and a global audience, it becomes personal — and international.
